The Fate/Grand Retagging Project

I'd be in favour of appending _(fate) to every chartag.

Doesn’t that seem a little neurotic? Sure, I understand that it’s for consistency’s sake, but in the first BUR, I concentrated on Servants because a lot of them are fictional/mythological/historical figures who have basically gone out of copyright, so any series out there could potentially use them. Having the qualifier would help in that regard. As far as Fate-specific characters though, I think that would be a bit much. I only see it being used for disambiguation purposes, like if a character from a different series shared the same name as a Fate character.

I’m just kind of worried that you’d be putting a lot of unnecessary effort into expanding a BUR without being certain that it will get passed or not.

That's why I'm asking what people think is the best way to go about it. I think there's arguments to be made for both, but at the same time, some names have zero reason to have a qualifier because of how unique they are.

For now I've isolated all these outside of the BUR depending on what we'll decide, it's a combination of things that were in the BUR + things I found before I even started skimming through the page in my previous message:

These are all names unique to Fate (with the exception of single names like Grainne or Sella which I left in the BUR because they could end up being ambiguous one day maybe). Most of these are unrelated to Servants also.

I'm not sure whether characters like Meltryllis, Kazuradrop or Passionlip should be in or out of the BUR because they're servants but also their names are unique as can be...

If the _(fate) modifier gets left out, then i think other big copyrights need to be treated similarly.
I'm in favour of adding it for two main reasons: consistency, and being able to know which characters are part of the series and which are not.
It's redundant with the copyright tag, but at the same time having hundreds of characters being sorted out by _(fate) helps a bit.

IMO, putting the _(fate) qualifier on every single character seems to be kinda excessive and would be the only franchise in danbooru to do so.

Not necessarily. I believe Fire Emblem does it, although that series has characters with just single names. Gensou Suikoden has the same premise, but it's a mixed bag there.

In any case, while I'm not 100% in support of appending *_(fate) to every single Fate-related chartag, Danbooru has proven that other series with huge casts of characters sometimes tend to get qualifiers regardless if they're necessary or not. You could say I'm just ambivalent about the whole issue since I haven't researched a lot of copyright tags and their characters to derive some solid examples from.

I don't think any of these characters need a qualifier. It would be excessive and unnecessary. Unless we get, for example, a new character from a completely different series that is also named Emiya Shirou. Qualifiers should be reserved for character names without surname or that may sound ambiguous imo (and of course the countless variants in Fate and other gacha games).

I don't know about you, but for characters/historical who show up in different gacha (Jeanne D'arc, Wu Zetian, Cleopatra, etc), in in favour of keeping the (fate) at the end. They're in multiple gacha, even.

The BUR definitely handles those cases, yeah! Those other characters I brought up are original characters to Fate which I wasn't sure whether to include for consistency or leave out because they don't need qualifiers. Right now they're not in the BUR.

It's done for Fire Emblem too, which uses very unique names, so if you decide to go a different way, the FE tags will have most of their modifiers removed for consistency.

I think the best way to go would be to make single names like Meltryllis have the modifier regardless of originality, while characters like Sola-Ui can go without.

But in Fire Emblem's case, these characters don't have surnames, so the qualifier is actually useful. Fire Emblem characters that have surname (for example, Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd) don't have qualifier because it is unnecessary, just like with these characters that are 100% original to Fate. For example, if Emiya Shirou's name was single name instead (Emiya or Shirou), them that would be a enough reason for it to have a qualifier.

This is also the case for characters like nowi_(fire_emblem) or lachesis_(fire_emblem), or... more than half of the cast i guess?
Thing is, they have a modifier. I think we should decide on a standardized solution to modifiers.

I noticed very redundant illyasviel_von_einzbern_(swimsuit_archer)_(fate). Is this this thread's work? There might be other similarly unneeded _(fate) suffixes.

No, it wasn’t. I believe the original tagger added for consistency’s sake to make it fit with how other swimsuit Servants are tagged.

This is probably it, yes. This thread hasn't resulted in anything yet since no BUR has gone through, but every swimsuit servant I've seen has the fate qualifier even if the name is unique, like meltryllis_(swimsuit_lancer)_(fate) vs meltryllis.

About kama_(fate/grand_order) I wonder why the arts she(he) was in didn't tag with matou_sakura while parvati_(fate/grand_order) 's one does? Isn't Kama also using Sakura's body? Doesn't it basically mean whenever Kama was in a pics that mean's Sakura also in it, and we have to tag her in, too?

It’s yet another case of the Fate series’ horrific tagging inconsistencies that badly needs to be cleaned up. Some Pseudo Servants are tagged with their human vessel’s chartag (Muramasa/Shirou, Parvati/Sakura, Ganesha/Jinako) and yet other ones aren’t (Ishtar/Rin, Jaguarman/Taiga, Kama/Sakura, etc).

I believe the absolute top priority is to actually clean up the basic qualifiers first before diving into more complicated subjects like this, Craft Essences, alternate forms, etc etc etc. The even bigger problem is that my previous BUR was not approved, and it looks like @Astolfo isn’t going to get theirs approved either, which means there’s a larger issue either with lack of a cohesive opinion overall, or something’s wrong with the moderation process. I don’t know much about either, so I’m sure someone else can elaborate better.

They're too different aesthetic-wise to warrant a sakura tag imo.
It'd be akin to tagging archer and emiya shirou together, since they're the same person.
