Pointless Pools

Posted under General

There are several different storylines that would be inconsistent/confusing when merged.
Having to add posts somewhere to the middle of a pool is also a pain when updating.
I think it's something like this?

Main1 - Kouji Manga - pool #8575; loose continuity
mini sidestory - goya - pool #9195
long sidestory - goya - pool #9885 - 30page long book
mini sidestory - akatsuki - pool #9196
mini sidestory - akatsuki - pool #9135
mini sidestory - haruna - pool #8743 - may be unrelated to the main storyline
mini sidestory - haruna - pool #8774 - sample, probably best to leave it in it's own pool until finished. may be unrelated to the main storyline.

Main2 - 2koma - pool #8747
long sidestory - tiny mutsu - pool #10036

Main3 - Today's Naval Base - pool #10101; doesn't seem to be quite the same admiral as Main1/2 (alternate universe with ooi as main char?)
prequel - pool #10181
long sidestory - pool #10684
mini sidestory - pool #9631

Main4 - Shipgirls' Daily Life - pool #9611

Unrelated sidestory1 - pool #9197 - Understand-a-shipgirl's-feelings unit

Unrelated sidestory2 - pool #10002 - Sketchy Kan-Colle 4-Panel Strip Manga

Unrelated sidestory3 - pool #10141 - Little Seven

The mini sidestories are kinda like extra chapters, and probably could be merged. The long storylines of 20+ pages could deserver their own pool, especially if it's an open ending and could be updated later.

pool #9746 - only 3 posts
pool #9579 - all posts already are inside a main storyline pool

I'm not sure why the 2koma series keeps being cited as somehow different from the main "admibro" series, since it references events from the previous arcs. That seems like a pretty clear indication to me that it's part of the same continuity. The same with the "Teeny Mutsu", which is a direct continuation of the "magic mallet" storyline. I also don't see where there's a disconnect in Today's Naval Base or Shipgirl's Daily Life and the original Kouji Manga timeline - just looking briefly, they even show Akitsu Maru reacting to Akatsuki's ring, which again shows continuity of story.

Whether the "book story" is long or not shouldn't really matter so much as whether it's the same continuity, and whether later events in the main story arc rely upon knowing those events that took place. If the book story relies upon main plot events, and main plot events rely upon knowing book story events, it's the same continuity. Using that reasoning, things like Goya getting ringed in pool #9885 are all part of the same continuity, and should be part of the same pool as the main series, where Goya starts showing up ringed after that book was published.

The three unrelated sidestories I agree with, and pool #9746 can just be stuffed inside a main pool, since they are just one-note gags taking place within the same larger continuity, not unlike what Yuureidoshi has been doing lately.

And so far as updating goes, there shouldn't be a reason they be added anywhere but the end of the pool upon updating. Part of the reason for this sort of folding-in of content is I don't see how these posts were ever meant to be viewed outside the continuity of the original pool in the first place. pool #8743 for example is actually just two segments of the original pool pulled apart for no good reason other than focusing upon Haruna. (Again, the first half of the pool is a reference to events that happened before in the original pool, and the original pool follows in the continuity of the events that happened there. The second half doesn't reference the first half, was written at different times, and seems to just flow entirely naturally in its place if put chronologically by time of posting in the main pool.)

What happens to 2koma posts which appear to be outside the main storyline? There are quite strips that, like pool #9197 which don't fit into the timeline or have events which don't in turn show up in the main storyline. Do we remove those posts as they're unrelated to the main storyline? Id so, that seems to go against the spirit of the consolidation of we leave them unpooled despite also sharing the 2koma theatre tag in the actual comic. If we pool them separately, then we haven't changed the number of pools.

For anything we do consolidate, I still suggest that we keep the pools separate do they're easily sorted and navigated (going archive diving for specific stories in the Hang In There Kogasa-san pool is a nightmare), but that we use links in the description to link them together for the reader. Bakery Kazami is an excellent example of this.

I know such things were discussed in topic #9823 a while back, but while I think that mostly ended on point, a few slipped through the cracks. Most notably Beautiful Smile (pool #3032). I thought the point in keeping around pools like Beautiful Hair, Beautiful Eyes, Perfect Feet, and Perfect Hands were because they were more about hard to draw anatomy being drawn well than simple beauty. I find no such justification for pool #3032 and am often baffled when I run across an image in the pool as to what sets it apart for inclusion.

Just as some random examples...
- post #647203, post #747923, post #1237225, post #1220591, post #1725862, and post #2174451 are all beautiful smiles appatently.
- post #904943, post #1450435, post #2037095, post #915792, post #1371889, and post #1049212 are apparently less beautiful?

I know there are "qualifiers" given in the pool's description, but you'll forgive me for thinking a smile reflecting "calm or joy" is more subjective than even most pools, somewhat arbitrary to what makes a smile beautiful or not, and not really reflected in what makes it in or not.

I do realize there are similar pools with Beautiful Dark Smile, Beautiful Sadness, and Stoic/Serious Beauty... but A) I'd like to tackle one thing at a time, and B) This seems, if anything, like the most open and subjective of the lot.

The whole point of pools is for subjective things that tags can't cover. As long as the pool follows a consistent theme then there isn't really a "too subjective" for it.

Should take a little more look at the topic I linked, and the topic that one links to in its first post; Certainly the mods saw fit to remove 14 pools because they were purely subjective themes, or at least subjective themes of a lower sort of set of standards.

Just saying pool #3032, at the very least, fits in that same mould. And it has even less purpose now that Favorite Groups have been implimented. So people can create their own "private pools" of which asses they find hawt or which smiles they think are pretty; That was certainly a functionality that was being looked for for such purposes back then.

That's the problem with all of these pools. They're not bad ideas per se (any user has the right to find some aspect of an image beautiful or even perfect) but it's when you make a public pool out of it and turn it into a dump of collective favorites that it becomes useless clutter.

Which makes me wonder: would it be possible to add some sort of collection-type pool functionality to favorites? This might be a good way to handle subjective stuff like this. Users would still be able to maintain their own themed collections of posts if they are so inclined, without the rest of us having to deal with it.

Like thus.

pool: #10509 - Nue's True Form

I remember this being deleted a long time ago, since we already know that the girl is indeed her true form.

I believe you're remembering wrong, the only thing that was done to pool #10509 was the regular human forms were purged from the pool.

Still, it's pointless to have a pool speculating something that is already confirmed.

On the other hand, just because the speculations are wrong doesn't mean we shouldn't group them together to make them easier to find

pool #208
Isn't this just the search bare_legs bunny_girl? And it has 63 pages, i.e. there isn't anything "special" about them.

I don't think this pool is pointless, sometimes doing mixed tag searches can cause the trouble of the latter tag + the former tag searches than the other way around, I did try this myself and I sometimes have these results so it's best to leave this pool alone.

Also, I believe pools are much easier to look for images that can be results of mixed tag searches unless the pool is qualified enough to become a tag itself in which the "Bare Legged Bunny Girls" pool may never qualify for that with the converted tag becoming imageless and aliased to the bunny_girl tag immediately.

Other than the two pools with one that has a little bit of posts that can be merged into the related main storyline pool if it's found and the other one safely deleted, I will be the first to object to any mod or senior member deleting the rest of the pools you mentioned!

I've seen some of the pools you mentioned for deletion and they're not worth to face such fate as they contain manga or doujin pages which are definitely hard to search within the artists' tags and will cause more trouble for users who want to see the images like reading a manga or doujin.

Lastly, if you find updating pools like those a PITB, then let the other users who have free time along with the appopriate new material to do it than you ask for deletion of them thinking it's a simpler solution which is to me it's not.
