donkey kong (series)
The Donkey Kong series is a franchise of games created by Nintendo centering around the titular character, Donkey Kong. It's first title was responsible for the birth of Nintendo's two most iconic characters, Donkey Kong and Mario, which in turn lead to the creation of the highly successful Mario series.
The plot usually revolves around Donkey Kong and his friends, collectively known as the "Kong Family", and their adventures, usually centered in the location of Donkey Kong Island.
While the early arcade titles have Donkey Kong in a non-playable and mostly antagonistic role, since Donkey Kong Country he has also become the starring protagonist in many titles since.
