Danbooru 2 upgrade on Feb 16, 2013

Posted under General

Just made my first attempt at translating under the new system. Clicking "n" and then on the image each time is a bit tedious, but it's better than the previous pre-Greasemonkey script set-up, when you had to click "Add Note" each time. At least the current version creates a note roughly where you click, rather than at the same spot each time, necessitating a lot of scrolling on larger images.

(And speaking of which, yes, please reinstitute resizing ASAP.)

I'm eager for the Danbooru script to be updated to fit the new set-up, as I keep click-dragging out of habit to make new notes, but I realize that may take a bit. (I'm actually surprised Albert didn't take the old script and incorporate/adapt it as part of the update, but I'm not sure how much more effort that would entail, so I don't consider that a valid complaint per se.)

The big problems I see so far with the current note set-up are:
1. Initial attempts to use larger font sizes end up with the fonts displayed in boxes that are too cramped. I created a two-word title at +3 font size, and it was condensed horizontally into two lines, which were squeezed together vertically with undersized leading and practically overflowing the top and bottom of the box.

2. Upon refreshing a page after entering notes, any <font> tags appear to be replaced with line returns, so all the formatting that shows is bold or italic. The note history shows the font tags that were used, so the site knows they were entered, but it refuses to parse them properly for display.

For reference, I have tried viewing pages with Firefox on a Mac and Chrome on a PC.

Moving on, I'm not sure I like the new idea of having to click an Edit button every time you preview a comment if you want to change something. Previously, the text was still available for editing just under the preview. It's a minor added step, but it's still an extra step, and it can add up if you keep spotting multiple points or change your mind after editing.

I see the Pool Index page has been reestablished, though it defaults to alphabetic order rather than update order. (When I tried to access it previously, it took me directly to a Pool Search page.) I second the motion of returning the index page link to part of the default-visible links in the top banner, rather than hiding it in the "More" list. I don't think I ever clicked on the Notes Index page, but I used the Pool Index all the time.

Similar to my comments on, er, comments, I get the idea of Pool > Search > Order: Last Updated. Is there a way to alter individual preferences so default sorting can be by "last updated"? Again, it appears to be steps added purely for the sake of adding them. There may be a perfectly good rationale for the change, but I don't comprehend it enough yet to see how it outweighs the cumulative inconvenience of those extra clicks every time you want to see the newest pool updates.

The same goes for the loss of auto-new tab when clicking a Pixiv link. Yes, I can right-click or control-click/command-click to get the pop-up and select "Open in new tab", though it will take time to get used to that after previous long habit. Again, it appears to be a step of minor inconvenience added for no particular reason, which puzzles me.

Updated

Why can't you just middle click the link? Or if you don't have a middle mouse button, right click > Open Link in New Tab?

That said, I don't see a reason why the automatic new tab shouldn't be brought back.

That's exactly what I was talking about. In this version, I have to do right click -> Open Link in New Tab every single time I want to open the Pixiv page? In the previous version, it was just one click and I'm there. This time it's two clicks and I'm there. Imagine how much of a clickfest that would be for me over time.

All of this is because I can't type Japanese, so I use the Pixiv tags to search the site. I could also copy and paste the kana into a word document and go from there, but that would cause me another headache down the road.

Again, this is more of an issue of convenience rather than functionality.

Blacklists work for me in the main post listing, but they don't work in the Comments listing or the Notes listing.

This. Instead of loading "Blacklisted" thumbnail, Wiki and artist pages show all blacklisted posts now. Damn.

And something I just noticed: if you click "Quote" in the forum after having typed some text in the reply box, the quoted post REPLACES all the text you've just typed. Weird.

I don't mean to be rude, albert, but this Danbooru v2 looks like an early pre-alpha. Is this update really worth breaking the entire website?

Updated

Not nececarily a problem, more of a question/concern.

What happend to the "Post without bumping" option?

And when trying to download a resized image, even when viewing original it keeps the "sample" name.

Manualy changing the directory from(for example) /data/sample/sample-number.jpg to /data/number.jpg solves this for the time being, but is annoying to repeatedly do.

Any trick for this?

Mountains of wasted space for Widescreen users. Horrible Font decisions for the sidebars. Pointlessly segregating tags after we already have the color system

I personally don't recall the whitespace issue on testbooru I will chalk it up to a formatting error.

The tag separation in infinitely better then just colour coding them.

The rather DUMB position for pool listing Making it a banner made it much more distinct and easier to navigate than making it look like just another tag.

It is still pretty hard to miss but being that pools get broken up into two lines if the names are and how small the arrows are it is less user friendly.

And why is Pools now buried in "More>>" while the rather less useful Notes, which to me displays as 2 rows of 8, yet again showing just how random the layout for images is it seems to be.

Yes it needs to be moved and if I recall it was under more on testbooru but I cannot recall if that was ever brought up.

The fact that this is being a 'test' and just how many mountains of bugs coming up really makes me wonder if this being rushed out is a good idea

Blame it on a lack of interest in testing on testbooru.

tl;dr: Layout Change for the Sake of change is rarely a good idea.

You can't seriously think Albert changed it just to change it.

Just tried to upload some high quality scans, but it seems DB2 doesn't accept images that are larger than 5mb, even if they're linked from dropbox as opposed to being uploaded straight from the computer.

Edit: And Find Artist doesn't seem to work as well, either.

Edit2: Is the lack of timestamps from the Tag History page intended?

I see 10 + 7 - 1 - 0 = 16. Seems correct to me.

Yes, it seems correct.

But some things don't make sense:
approved: (75 / 10)
uploads: 75
deleted: 4

My approved images should be (71 / 10) last time I checked before the upgrade.

There have been some larger than 5mb posts today, like post #1362267 which is almost 10mb.
