Upload sniping / Uploading with few to no tags

Posted under General

Displaying the uploader's name so prominently might worsen the issue of uploading with few tags, but it's also a good incentive for a lot of people to try and track down stuff to upload. Everybody wants to see the numbers next to their name go up, after all.

Instead of removing an incentive, wouldn't it be preferable to make other contributions more visible? E.g. we could have the user that added commentary, or the translator, or the best tagger, etc. be visible in a post, instead of just the uploader.

Profile pages could be changed accordingly as well, downplaying -though still keeping- uploads, and putting more emphasis on tagging, translations, wiki editing, etc.

Equalizing the emotional rewards one get from various types of contributions instead of removing one altogether, so to speak.

Just to make sure, my position haven't changed. If people worry that much about their nickname being/not being seen in "uploader" field, it's their own problem, and not a thing that should be fixed in the code. Hiding or removing uploader name is not feasible because people will start uploading shit without fear of retribution from community. Uploader and approver names are displayed so that people know who to blame, not for the sake of e-penis.

The only valid concern I've seen here is that undertaggers are promoted to builders based on upload count. To that, I can only say that tag change report was implemented by request from mods, exactly because they wanted a faster way to check if the uploader cares about their uploads properly before promoting them. So unless someone gives me examples like I asked earlier, I don't think that is a problem either. If people upload without tagging afterwards, give them a negative and/or report them, it's as simple as that.

Also, emotional rewards are a tough topic. I think that Danbooru keeps going by relying on collaboration instead of competition, and making any kinds of charts, rankings or whatever will only force people to get salty and try to game the system somehow, since many are sore losers, and many others will give up because they'll never reach the top anyway. That's my personal opinion though, feel free to argue.

Maybe some sort of color-coded ranking system for tag gardening and the like, as long as their edits aren't reverted within a period of time, to prevent people from trying to game the system? Still, I don't see people currently fighting over uploads moving over to, say, tag edits just like that. Translations are a niche thing that few people can do, and wiki editing seems more of something that should be discussed in the forums briefly first before edits take place.

As for tracking stuff down, I know that story very, VERY well. Once upon a time, when Ars was extremely active, I left pixiv entirely for several years because I couldn't compete with the min-tagging, shifting to fixing scans in Photoshop and teaching myself all manner of technique to get the result I wanted. First to yandere and minitokyo, and tinami (When it was a thing) until people followed me there. Then to e-h, until I was followed there, and then to twitter, until I was followed there. The only thing I retain a monopoly on now are scans, and though at this point I've been at it for I think five years now, I'm not sure whether I've built up a reputation as a scan guy or not. At the very least, I've been recognized once on the internet, surprisingly enough in the middle of a Twitch chat by one of the other viewers.

Long story short, I've been there and done that with trying to find new sources when my integrity couldn't compete with min-tags. Now I've come full-circle back to pixiv in recent months, though I probably lose the battle to min-taggers about a third of the time. As many long-time uploaders do, one eventually mellows out in regards to uploading, so it doesn't really bother me anymore, as uploads are unimportant in the bigger scheme of life.

My several attempts at grooming a successor to my scan-works has failed, and I don't have the time or energy to go through everything on my own as my backlog balloons into the thousands. My scan cleans take on average 30-40 minutes, while my detexts range from 1 hour to 3 hours each, averaging about 1.5.

Edit: I should clarify, the only situation where I beat a min-tagger in a contest of speed is when I have already laid the tags and rating out, having analyzed the upload patterns of the artist and determined when it would be uploaded to pixiv. Otherwise, it is me uploading an image while the other party is busy with something. (I do everything manually by hand, I haven't used the bookmarklet in 6 years because it was a faulty PoS at the time)

Personally I don't care if I'm the uploader or not. It's just frustrating when you try to upload one with lots of tags and only get to see a message that it just got uploaded and all the tagging you done pre-upload is go to waste.

Yeah, merging should be brought back and made intelligent. I'll open an issue about that.

Preferably not merged under the umbrella of the first uploader, as that would take away from the second uploader's efforts.

I have had my tag additions merged under the name of other people on several occasions. It is unpleasant.

Then this is a bug and should get fixed.
But I'm in great favor for this change. But when this happens, then these tags should not count as "you missed tags xy on your uploads" and the DanboBot shouldn't contact you because of that, since this feature should be used for tags that you don't use that frequently, but still exist. No one wants to see the bikini tag popping up in such a DM.

Pretty much impossible from technical standpoint. It will be treated exactly as if someone came and tagged your post a few minutes after you did. If you don't want that happening then, well, tag when you upload.

Meh, kinda goes against the nature of that other feature then, but if that's technical impossible, then one has to life with that.

iirc you only get a DM if multiple of your post doesn't have a tag that other tag it.

Hmm. It's not exactly "merged", it's just displayed out of order for some reason? CodeKyuubi, did you only remove "earite" from post #2730692?

It's no longer visible, but in the minutes following my tag addition it looked like the above history, but eventually merged into Provence's. I only remember because I sent him a dmail about it.

Hmm, I don't exactly understand this one. So Provence uploaded the post, you've added some tags, they got merged to his version, you've added some more tags, and they didn't merge this time?

No, for the clearite image I added about half to 2/3 of the tags, which merged into Randeel's entry, and about half the tags for Provence's image. As you said, I added tags at the same time he edited his post, mine got merged into his and my tag entry disappeared. I then corrected erroneous tags that Provence had misused.

I care a bit about being the uploader, but care more that I spent the three minutes getting to an acceptable taggi level and got sniped by someone who went with the artist name, character name, and copyright. And that's it.
