2024 south korea martial law crisis
On the night of 3 December, 2024, South Korean president Yoon Suk-Yeol declared martial law to suspend the country's parliament. In his declaration, Yoon accused the opposition coalition, which has the majority in the National Assembly, of being involved in "anti-state activities".
In the ensuing events, the opposition coalition MPs voted to force the president to lift the martial law, and protests ensued to pressure Yoon to lift the martial law. After just 6 hours, president Yoon lifted the martial law after pressure from the South Korean public.
The event was generally described as a self-coup, as Yoon's approval ratings had significantly dropped before the event, along with facing various scandals. Yoon was later impeached on 14 December that year.
