Tsukuba Arrives at the Golden Bay!
The training ship Tsukuba visited San Francisco in 1875 on a long-distance training voyage. The painting depicts Tsukuba passing through the Golden Gate Strait before the bridge had been built. Among the 37 students on board at the time were Yamamoto Gonbei and Uemura Hikonojo. After departing Shinagawa and sailing for 38 days, Tsukuba arrived safely in San Francisco on December 14th.
I have also uploaded a photo of the work in progress. My style is to make small adjustments to the entire painting while checking the color balance. There are difficulties unique to analog, as you cannot use the technique of drawing the background and ships on separate layers and then compositing them later, as is the case with digital.
Acrylic on canvas, F6.
