On this name, back in 1282, the reason behind the name of the mafia, the "Sicilian Vespers" took place!
Apparently, this is actually most likely folk etymology and not the actual origin of the term. Either way, the story goes that it was an acronym of "Morte Alla Francia Italia Anelia!" ("Death to the French is Italy's Cry!").
