POKEDDEX: YOUR CHOICE! VOL 2 has officially begun! During January 2019 I will draw one Pokémon each day based on the suggestions that you guys have sent me. Each Pokémon has been chosen with a poll so all the power is in your hands. Also by your request I will be submitting each painting individually. Usually I just post them as a single dump but I decided to try something different. Let's see how this works! I might still post a compilation of all paintings when they're done.
It's the last Pokeddex painting, hooray! It has been fun doing these but it's gonna be good to have the time to focus on other things now. The last category was a massive poll between all the remaining Pokémon suggestions. The idea was to get one winner but despite having the poll up for several days I just didn't get one winner. There were two Pokemon that were constantly tied. Constantly. They were maybe two or three votes apart but the other would always catch up. I didn't want to make another poll to decide between the two because a) I really just wanted to get this one done and b) it was supposed to be a choice between all of the remaining ones, not two final contenders. So, to get an easy, quick, non-biased solution I just picked the Pokémon that had third most votes, Cresselia.
Cresselia can be described as the cosmic rubber duck. It's quite clearly a bird based creature but its, well, rubber duck like anatomy can make it a bit tricky to interpret as a realistic bird. One challenge was the small arms, but that's just one of the things I decided to break and do differently for the sake of my interpretation. My version of Cresselia is mostly based on the demoiselle crane but vaguely on swan and some birds of paradise. The reason why I went with a crane rather than a swan is that Cresselia is likely based on a mythical fowl of good fortune, Sarimanok, although it seems to be more like a rooster. Since cranes are also considered symbols of good fortune (at least in Japan) I thought that would be a good fit. (In Finnish mythology swans are considered to be the messengers between this world and the world of the dead so something about a swan interpretation felt off.
And that concludes the challenge! I hope you enjoyed seeing these paintings! I sure did enjoy making them. I'll probably be posting a compilation with all of them later. I will also be selling the original paintings so stay tuned for that!
