Its use comes from the idea that saltwater cleanses one of their sins and impurities.
This belief stems from the legend of Izanagi-no-Mikoto, the creator deity in Japanese mythology, who had cleansed himself of impurities using saltwater after he had visited the underworld, Yomi, to see his wife, Izanami.
