Japan officially recognizes this day as a commemorative day for carbonated drinks as the onomatopoeia for the "fizz" of a soft drink in Japanese is シュワ or "shuwa", and contains the characters for 4 (シ) and 8 (ワ), thus 4/8.
This day was promoted heavily as the carbonated drinks day by the POKKA SAPPORO Food & Beverage Ltd. corporation which sells many such drinks.
