3/26 is Katyusha's Song Day!
Did you know that Japan is the only country that calls this accessory "Katyusha"? In other countries, it is called a headband or an Alice band (from Through the Looking Glass)!
On March 26th 1914, a play based off of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy's "Resurrection" was first premiered in Japan, which included a song titled "Katyusha's Song" sung by the character Katyusha, played by Sumako Matsui. Both the play and the song were a huge hit and spawned a new musical genre, ryuukouka, that flourished throughout the early-to-mid 1900s, which eventually splintered into two other genres, enka and poppusu, earning the song an unforgettable spot in Japanese history.
The costume of Sumako Matsui's Katyusha at the time is believed to include a horseshoe-shaped headband, though photographs and the play script seem to provide no evidence of this.
