/ki/ 木 is tree. /kinoko/ is mushroom, but you can read it as 木の子 'child of a tree'.
It even works in a different way, as Christmas trees are traditionally Pine (or fir) and pine in Japanese is /matsu/ 松, the same matsu as matsutake.Thanks to me...so she was felled by my devil-tree, then!
