温暖化的代价是高昂的，最为直观的则是其对基础设施的损害与海平面的升高。海水热膨胀，冰川融化，冻土融化这三者都会导致海平面上升。

当冻土退融时，冻结在土壤中的冰变成液态水。部分水分流向河流与大海。残留于陆地的水分则形成热融洼地、热融湖，并引发出更多的冻土区工程地质问题，不利于大型道路和工程的建设。同时，随融化放出的温室气体会加剧温暖化的进程。

现存的道路正在逐年塌陷严重，塌陷的沥青道路甚至会阻碍人们的前进。路基周而复始的冻胀、融沉和热融滑塌是冻土地区道路建设和维护所面临的主要难题。如果一段道路滑塔，简单的重新铺设道路毫无意义。随着地面继续变形，也许一年后损害就会再次出现。
