The actual kanji for "horse" (while the following three are fictional). The character is derived from a pictogram of a horse showing a flowing mane, legs evolving into four dots.

竹 (take) means bamboo. By the way, bamboo stilts are called "take-uma" in Japanese.

The "horse" kanji as it appears in the franchise (especially the anime). As there are horse girls but no actual horses in the world of Umamusume, there are only two dots instead of four, presumably representing a running horse girl with flowing hair.

Continuing by that logic, more legs means more dots. There would be eight dots if horses had eight legs like say, Sleipnir. The style of running here is typical of the comedy anime of the 70-80s, which Maruzensky is solidly in.
