Blog post commentary:
I wanted to draw something with those face characters (apparently they're called similes or emoticons).
You see people use these to cover up the faces of themselves or passers-by in photos uploaded to social media, right? It started with me wanting to do that for a class photo, so I wondered what it would be like if you covered everyone except yourself with them, but I did some searching and I found that that already kind of exists (in photos and not drawings, but still). I don't think it's meant to be art as such, and they just wanted to cover them up. In any case, I guess it's fine if it already exists, but I started wondering if I could draw something interesting that goes in another direction, and in the end I ended up going "What about something like a photo with only you in it but there's a bunch of emoji lined up?" I got very curious about how it would look, so I gave it a shot.
The title is from a song by Foster The People I listened to a lot while drawing.

I don't know if those emoji are all the girl's imaginary friends, or if they do exist but for some reason they all couldn't be in the picture, or maybe they're all dead or what's really going on.
I've often left the door open to imagine things by leaving all kinds of possibilities and nuances in my drawings, but I came to think that actually not leaving anything lets you imagine things in its own way, so on this occasion I've eliminated basically all of those elements.
When I saw the finished drawing, I thought "I've been putting these kinds of drawings out in the world because I want to see drawings like them for a long time, huh" and got emotional. Putting aside artistic talent for a moment, I love these kinds of drawings, but what about all of you?
