Reunited in Death
Some of the motivation behind this is admittedly a criticism for how the end of the series played out. I have a whole lot of criticisms about the end, mostly in regards to Barber's writing rather than Roberts, but I could write a whole diatribe about that. This image is meant to address the single biggest problem I have with the ending: These two never reunited.
Story-wise, I'm not surprised that never happened. In the end both of them were off fighting literal planets and having Megatron or Optimus hop from one world ender to another would probably feel like a bit much. Still, something would have been better than the nothing we got and even a page's worth of interaction would have been satisfying given where these characters have come from and where they went.
But on the plus side, that's where the strength of an unsatisfying ending comes into play. I can do what the story didn't do and that is actually pretty nice.
It was a good run and I certainly wish that this wasn't the end, but that's what it is. I've read IDW's Transformers since the Simon Furman days and this is a universe I've thoroughly loved: even when it made questionable choices or lackluster decisions. I don't know if I will love whatever comes next as much, and I doubt I'll love it the same.
It's been a wonderful ride and I look forward to what comes after.
Whatever it is, we face it together.
