Japanese feudal lords would often reward people who kill off enemy generals or lords. The usual way of verifying this is with a decapitated head.
This is sometimes played for jokes (or overblown drama like in Drifters) when you have a particularly bloodthirsty lord or samurai character who goes "HEADS HEADS HEADS" all the time.
