Pokemon Reimagined: Mamoswine
Here's a realistic Pokemon interpretation that isn't tied to a collab for once! This time we have Mamoswine that was suggested in a Pokemon Reimagined stream a while back. I personally wouldn't have ever thought about drawing Mamoswine so I am really happy that someone else did. This is by far one of my favourite pieces, both in terms of concept, design and also process. I have recorded the full process, from concept sketching to sketching the illustration and to rendering everything so I will be putting together a process video later on!
Mamoswine is a really awesome Pokemon. I used one in a Nuzlocke once and it was absolutely brutal. Loved it. Very strong. It definitely deserves more love, it's so underappreciated. As for the interpretation, this one a boar-mammoth hybrid. It's more based on a boar than a mammoth. Boars are pretty damn badass animals and also really big. I felt that a board would have a better anatomy for Mamoswine that is the chunky and intimidating. Mammoths are also large but they don't have the same kind of beastly feel that boars have and I felt that was a crucial bit if I wanted to give Mamoswine a fair representation. Also, the entire Swinub family has this pig theme going on so I thought it would be a much more solid base for this design. Of course Mamoswine has the very strong mammoth element, giant tusks, but those alone weren't enough to justify a full mammoth approach.
I'm very happy with how this turned out. I had a blast painting that fur. I had no idea if I would be able to get the fur done right but it was actually surprisingly easy and I got into a very good flow while drawing. Rough fur texture is great. I need to study different fur textures more. Maybe one day I could make a fur tutorial, too. This was a great lesson to me in so many ways!
I hope you enjoy!
