Artist's commentary
He thought Mama-gasa would stay behind, but she climbed up, so he had no choice but to come along, it seems. :-)
I figured those steps would be tough on a body in its 70's, but there were a number of other fairly elderly people who were also climbing them, which I thought was amazing.
