Is it appropriate to use character_doll when it's actually a puppet, as in post #596258 or post #658097?
Well, character_doll is implicated to doll, so we could either remove the implication and allow some fudging in cases like this, or come up with a new tag.
I'm in favor of fudging, myself.
Is it reasonable to apply character_doll to post #706998 and characters on cellphone_straps and keychains, or would that be fudging too hard?
Bump for more opinion. The wiki definition for doll seems vague enough to admit examples on cellphone_straps and keychains (bar the "playable" bit), but I'm hesitant to fudge it to that extent without a clear consensus, or removal of the character_doll -> doll implication.
"Playable" is relative, and a bit of a silly criterion regardless. Character cellphone straps and the like should definitely be under character_doll, in my opinion.
I've never considered a figurine as a doll, to me they're more of a statuette. The advent of figurines with joints isn't the norm nor are those with fabric clothing. The fact that the normal ones are solid should really discount them as dolls.
About the keychains and cellphone straps, I'm not really in agreement that they should be under the doll tag. They don't really fit in and calling them a doll is a stretch, and if you stretch too far you start junking up the tag with noise.

I'd say figurine would be a more accurate description (although that's currently aliased to figure, which is already in use) - "figure" is often just the general shape of a person, or even a number (not one of those numbers, although they generally cut a nice figure too), rather than an actual physical object.
It would probably be useful to try to define the difference between a doll and a figurine, but that may not be trivial - figurines are usually smaller, but there's a fair amount of size crossover between smaller dolls and larger figurines.
Probably the best I can come up with is that dolls usually have separate clothing, whereas figurines have it as part of the main object. That's still rather fuzzy, though - many cloth dolls have their clothing permanently attached (although it's usually still separate pieces of material), and of course many figurines have detachable/swappable accessories (though almost never the main clothing)...
I agree that figurines and cellphone straps shouldn't fall under doll. Since character doll should probably be a broader concept, I vote for removing the implication.
Bump.
Is there agreement that e.g. a cellphone_strap can be a character_doll without being a doll?
If so the character_doll -> doll implication should be removed.
Yeah, I agree with removing the implication and tagging any inanimate representation of a character (save photos and the like) with character_doll.
I'm thinking we need a more general name for any kind of object made after a character (but I only come up with silly tag names so far). While mostly dolls and cellphone straps, we can also run into less common items like in post #746339.
character-shaped_object... maybe.
Naming things that general starts to sound very strange and vague. Something like character_figure might sound somewhat better.
