One thing that I think might help people like Anelaid: Create a "Why are my posts not being approved?" thread, where people can come in, post a link to their "user:username status:deleted" list, and then people here on the forums will try and give them (subjective, random, probably not actually from people doing approving, but still potentially edifying) feedback on it.
Just one thread, mind, where anyone who has that question can post. We wouldn't want the forum to be overwhelmed with thousands of threads asking the same question, but one thread for feedback on your deleted uploads might be useful. At the very least it couldn't hurt -- worst case, we have one wasted thread -- and if random people on the forums can manage to show someone what's wrong with their uploads, that can only decrease the amount of crap in the mod queue, making things better for everyone (in the long run.)
We have the review thread, but that's more for when you think individual stuff is good. This would be for when someone suspects they're actually uploading bad stuff (or at least stuff not suitable for Danbooru), but wants the forum to try and help explain why.
These new test janitors are ridiculous, 4 of them wouldn't even have contributor if they weren't made test janitors (and if they were already contributor they shouldn't have been.)
I don't know why the only metric used is favorites when any random idiot can favorite a bunch of posts out of popular or look at the favorites for current mod team members.
I really think they need at minimum 200 posts, 5 deletions per 100 with zero TOS violation deletions, and cannot have new uploads being flagged on a regular basis.
Log said: With albert no probably not, you will know by having access to the mod queue or just checking your profile.
Actually, when I was a Test Janitor, I had access to the mod queue. I also had the ability to delete posts too, which seems to be contrary to what the Test Janitor application page says (might need to file a Trac ticket on that if it's still that way).
Anyway, knowing whether you got promoted to a full-fledged Janitor or not is pretty much a non-issue. It's not like anyone's gonna get stuck in "am I still a Test Janitor or not?" limbo.
I think that's why there is a 1-month-test-phase to try out the test janitors. I'm not sure if anyone besides Albert is going through the approvals of these newbies, but maybe a few moderators should do that (once per week or something). After that you could send a message to those who "abuse" their test janitor position to approve/upload shitty pics: please raise up your artistic standard.
And sorry if this is already what you're going to do.
Btw, there're some pic that fell below my standard, usually because of bad anatomy or proportion. But I still can see why some people like it if the mistake is small. Do I approve these or just keep up with my standard?
Coconut said: EDIT: Hm, obviously favorites aren't the only criteria, as ultima only has 63.
Yeah, it definitely can't be the only criteria, as a few of the other Janitors that were added during the previous recruitment phase (Ephyon and Evangeline A.K. McDowell) also have less than 100.
I'm actually very surprised that non-contributors were eligible at all. Privileged to Janitor is quite a jump.
It is a big jump, but again, during the last recruitment phase quite a few other Privileged users went straight to Test Janitor (Bapabooiee, bored_man, and I think there was another), so I'm not sure why it's suddenly so unheard of now. The users who had no previous invite and/or uploads, on the other hand, is a bit more awkward.

I received a dmail stating I had been accepted for the trail period, so I'd assume all the other Test Janitors did as well.
I get on today and find tons of good images flagged for "questionable quality" when they all look fine. almost all of them flagged by Bapabooiee he doesn't seem to know the difference between the quality of art and the type of art.

Everything currently flagged by Bapabooiee, with maybe one or two exceptions, is awful.
All of the yukkuri ones are of questionable quality that he flagged, so I agree with him there. Z-aki is good by OYP standards, but poor by any other so that makes sense, even though its one of his few non-abuse ones. Although I like the series that was flagged, with the Marisa, I will admit the quality is poor art-wise.
It does seem that a lot of yukkuri pictures get downvoted, even if they are approved, so I think its just that people don't like yukkuris so its harder for them to get approved, but that was already discussed and dealt with.

While most were crap, yes, I did also flag a couple that I felt were only borderline in quality. Perhaps they weren't flat-out bad, but I questioned them enough that I felt a proper round through the mod queue was warranted.
And Vezon, while there's a fair amount of content & art styles I dislike on the site, I wouldn't flag any posts for those reasons alone. I only flag content I genuinely believe are poor or not up-to-snuff -- and only after making a judgement call on whether they're worth flagging or not.
Been wondering something while reading the thread that might be related to Log's complaint.
Dunno if it's actually happening or not and how measurable it'd be, but I feel that hiring several test-janitors at the same time might lead to some form of competition. That is, as proof of dedication, one might be tempted to approve either too much, resulting in bad approvals, or too frequently, resulting in other and possibly better test-janitors to be shadowed.
For that reason I like the idea of automated selection of potential candidates and let the staff put one of them to the test every so often even with no need, rather than suddenly throwing in a bunch only when the need arises. Come to think of it, pretty much like it works for priv and contribs already.

I won't lie, there's definitely been a few images I was very "meh" about, but ended up approving to prevent myself from looking inactive or whatever. Nothing too bad, I think, but I probably would have waited longer and let them sit in the queue for a bit if it didn't feel like it was such a race against time. I like to get at least a few approvals a day, and when some of the other Test Janitors already have 2-3x more approvals than me, I can get a bit antsy at times.
On a related note, I've been effectively approval "sniped" no less than a dozen times already. And by that I mean, during the 30-60 seconds it takes me to examine an image to make sure it's good, another Janitor (test or otherwise) comes along and approves it before me. Wouldn't be such a big deal normally, but since it can feel like a bit of a competition during the trial period, it's somewhat aggravating.

I agree here. Slowly bringing in new Test Janitors while slowly filtering out old, inactive Janitors would definitely work better than the usual "mass recruitment every ~6 months" method. I guess it's just a matter of the automated system being finalized.
Testing many people at one time does tend to bring out competition. Especially with 9 test janitors + active janitors. The batch I was in received something around three months for testing, which was enough time to gain the approvals needed. Hopefully the admin plans on giving you guys just as much time.

Even if it seems like a race, approving fewer-but-higher-quality posts trumps saturating the site with mediocre ones. The whole point of Danbooru is to be a database for high-quality art, so it doesn't matter how many posts you approve - they just have to be good quality, and you have to be reasonably active.
My advice would be to continue holding a high standard, and only approving content you're thoroughly sure meets those standards. Don't sweat it if it looks like anyone is approving more than you are.
I also do believe that's what EB did when he was a test janitor. His approval count was substantially lower compared to the others, but (IMO) he only approved top-notch content. I think, because of that, he was probably the best test janitor of the lot.
A feeling of competition is good if it leads people to strive to approve higher quality posts than the other applicants. The problem is that it instead led people to approve higher quantities of posts, not quality, because frankly that seemed like the deciding factor in who got the job.

Which sucks when the trial period was supposed to be one month so you leave on a 2 week vacation when the month is over only to come back and find you're still on trial and you've fucked your chances. :V
