Well, maybe the guy that approved it missed it (Teclo) the first time through the queue? Or maybe the fact that the second one got translated had something to do with it (not that the translation contributes much to the image in this case imo).

I'd put it down to luck. As much as we try to make the queue system fair and predictable, there will always be cases where posts are missed, looked at by different people with different opinions, mods will leave because of exams or holidays, etc. There's always forum #12247 for appeals.

Note also that the approved image is directly from pixiv, which presumably makes it the original. Even if both were in the mod queue, and both were translated, I'd still approve that one and not yours.

Funny, I appealed an image that should've made it out of the mod queue and that was ignored too.

I gladly would have used my contrib status to upload it mnyself, and even that seems to have been overlooked ...
Only thing wrong was a few artifacts, and I've seen much, much worse in both art and artifacts approved lately.

Yes, this definitely counts for a lot. A proper source is a big advantage.

But as others said, it's just bad luck and a hiccup in the dupe detection.

I will say, for my part, if an image has untranslated text in it it gets judged on the basis of the image alone. If the text is translated, then I take the text into account. As many pictures that have text in them rely at least in some part on the text, this can make a significant difference, particularly with things like 4komas or doujinshi pages.
