can't they do same workaround as pixiv? make you toggle your account to "safe mode" to purchase, but then allow you to untoggle safemode after purchasing with paypal? works for pixiv...

It used to be that you could only make payments on https://safebooru.donmai.us/, Danbooru's SFW subdomain, probably for that exact reason, but apparently this wasn't enough.
I was interested in Gold mostly to use the API. As it stands, when trying to use the API to pull pictures with specific tags, I get issues that would be resolved by having a Gold account. Notably tag limits, posts that require gold accounts to see, etc etc
Unfortunately, it seems that from this thread, the only way to fix that is by "contributing". It's just not a reliable way to do what I'm looking to get done. Alternatively, I could just scrape the website or scrape another booru (since most of them have no API or awful APIs).

don't really understand how this can't be enough given how Pixiv is much larger and would likely be under a lot more scrutiny than Danbooru is. seems like a choice to completely ban it and not have a solution by this point... I really do want to upgrade my account still since a lot of AI models use Danbooru tagging and Gelbooru has different tags for some of danbooru's database.. so I need Danbooru as a search engine.

Pixiv has had issues with western payment processors. That's why accounts with their location set to certain countries, such as America, can't view posts tagged loli/shota.
Thought of upgrading for the first time this week, but guess that's not happening. When people say contribute for account upgrade, how much are we talking? A few hours worth, a few dozen? Dependent on what you do? I'm already a music archivist so open to putting in the work, but some idea of what it'd take would be nice.

It depends on what you do, but 650-750 posts with a good deletion ratio (~5%) is often enough to get builder. It'll be slow at first but everyone gets better at it as time goes on. For other tasks like gardening and translating it may be a different amount of effort, some you can do passively but will take longer.

I've already done things on e-h for a long time. And I don't gotta put in 100 hours of free labour to get to use more than 2 tags in a search. Sure, you need hath perks for things like increased thumbnail count etc...
I just don't have the time nowadays to put in free labour in another service. Especially not when it relies on power users to decide if you get the perks or not. Even hath perks don't rely on power users.
The 2 tag system is just too restrictive. Especially with how things like Random and Rating count as a tag.

Rating doesn't count towards the tag limit. Check the bottom of the search cheat sheet.
