nuke octarian

In the Splatoon universe, octarians are a species based on octopi. However, unlike our other fictional race tags (miqo'te, rito etc.), there exists a wide range of different octarian subspecies. What this means is that Marina, Shiver, DJ Octavio, the funny lil' Octotroopers, the big fat Octobombers, and this fucking thing all qualify for the same tag. In fact, calling it a race tag is a disservice as "octarian" is closer to a biological order (like primates).

Realistically, the tag is almost entirely comprised of Marina, Shiver, and Octoling player characters, who are all already searchable on their own and do not need a special tag that pointlessly groups them all together. Unfortunately, this makes it next to impossible to search for "enemies from Splatoon's campaigns", which is a reasonable thing to want to search for. On that note, I propose the creation of an octarian_(enemy) tag to enable such a search. Before making it, however, I'd like some input on if the Takozonesu should be excluded. They're technically both Octarians and enemies, but they don't look anything like the octopus creatures they'd be being lumped in with, and with a count of almost 500 they'd flood the results for the tag. You'd have to search octarian_(enemy) -takozonesu if you wanted to see anything that wasn't a Takozonesu.

Yes I agree to exclude them.

Please create octarian (enemy) first so that we can tell what else is under this tag that needs to be cleaned up first.

Sorry, forgot to do that part. In any case, it's done now. I also cleaned out octarian -octarian_(enemy) -octoling -marina_(splatoon) -shiver_(splatoon) -takozonesu -dj_octavio. It was a mix of untagged Octoling Boys/Octoling Girls, incorrectly tagged Inklings, a few untagged Octoling enemies, one incorrectly tagged octopus, and some minor Octoling side characters like Dedf1sh. The only thing that remains in the search now is the latter.

Ok, question now: do we want to have a race tag for human octolings? From an outsider point of view they all look the same to me.

The problem, as I see it, is that removing a tag for "just give me all the human octarians" invites for people to just dump everything under octoling. And this is already happening for both that tag and inkling: see for example inkling -inkling_girl -inkling_boy (600 posts), or octoling -octoling_girl -octoling_boy (800 posts).

To better phrase it, it looks to me like inkling and octoling, rather than being for the player character specifically, are being used for "any octoling/inkling unless the uploader knows that tag's only for player/unnamed characters", and that generic term seems to also be the meaning in the game. If I open the splatoon wiki page for Marie, it tells me Marie is an inkling. The same thing goes for Marina's wiki page and octoling.

So why are our inkling and octoling tags chartags, instead of just being generic blue tags? Is it really unfathomable that someone would want to search for any inkling or octoling? Because if I wanted to do that right now I'd have to go spelunking in the related tags to figure out a giant OR search to include all of them, when I just want to look at naked monster girls with a specific phenotype.

inkling boy etc have a similar problem: they sound like a tag like furry female & co, when they're really for a specific skin. They should be qualified, or split if they're for multiple skins all lumped in one tag (which, from a cursory glance, seems to be the case to at least some degree).

Updated

BUR #22760 has been rejected.

create alias octoling_girl -> octoling_girl_(player_character)
create alias octoling_boy -> octoling_boy_(player_character)
create alias inkling_girl -> inkling_girl_(player_character)
create alias inkling_boy -> inkling_boy_(player_character)

I don't have a better qualifier to suggest, but I was the one who originally submitted the implications for the inkling tags and even I regularly forget these are for the player characters only. Does splatoon not have a canonical name to refer to these characters?

Yes, Splatoon does.

The multiplayer mode player characters which have infinite different hairstyles, outfits, designs etc. are currently distinguished with Inkling+Boy/Girl and Octoling+Boy/Girl. (I have no opinion on the qualifier BURs yet I'll have to think about it)

Agent 3 (Splatoon), Agent 4 (Splatoon), Agent 8 (Splatoon) and Agent 3 (Splatoon 3) refer to very specific canonical designs for the Story mode playable characters, each of which have a lot of art of their own. At the very least I feel the Multiplayer customizable PCs need to be distinguished from the Story Mode specific design PCs because that's how the fandom/artist percieves it as well

BUR #22761 has been approved by @nonamethanks.

create alias inkling -> inkling_player_character
create alias octoling -> octoling_player_character
remove alias inkling -> inkling_player_character
remove alias octoling -> octoling_player_character
category inkling -> general
category octoling -> general

You're right; it's not unreasonable to want to search for all Inklings or all Octolings, regardless of if they're an NPC or not. However, it's also not unreasonable to only want to search for Inkling/Octoling player characters, regardless of their gender. This BUR allows for both to be possible.

Yes, they do. The official names for these player characters are Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy, Octoling Girl, and Octoling Boy.
sorry lol
