Feature Suggestion: Adding relation between character tags and copyright tags

Posted under General

While updating one of the wiki pages for a copyright I had the idea of adding a new relation between characters tag and the copyright tag. Most copyright wiki pages have a more or less well maintained list of characters, that are related to the copyright.

To be honest, this is the worst of all solutions, because characters may be left out, could be misspelled or in some other way no be associated to the copyright.

This relation between copyright and character could be used to:

* Create automatically lists of characters for copyright wiki pages ("Associated characters: <list of character wikis>").
* Add automatically a link to the copyright on the character page ("This character belongs to <link to copyright wiki>.").
* Create a tag implication for <character> -> <copyright>.
* Create a ambiguity page while searching for characters with a similiar name, but that belong to different copyrights (This could be resolved with <name of character> -> ambiguity page -> list of <name of character>_(<copyright>)).
* unify the layout of character tags (<name of character>_(<copyright>)).

Of course there are also drawbacks:

* The tag implication feature handles this already. Why bother to implement a redundant feature?
* Characters aren't associated at all with a copyright (Mascots or free characters like cap-tan. Those could be handled by implementing this relation <copyright> 0-1 <- * <character> or in other words: the relation is optional.).
* A character could be related to several copyrights (Although I couldn't remember any special example for this case.).

Any remarks?

There's no easy way to implicate this, either in the current system or through anything new. We've always rejected char > copy implications because it's unwieldy to do them (and maintenance would be a real bitch any time tags get changed), considering we'd probably need tens of thousands, and the vast majority of images aren't missing the copyright tag anyway. I've noticed in doing various "seriesname charactertagcount:0" searches that we're pretty thorough. It's more common that someone tags the series but not the characters, and there's certainly no way to automate that.

We've already got a way to generate a decent list of characters most commonly connected to any given tag (related tags feature), which is generally pretty useful. Only for series with a huge number of characters (Touhou) will the list often be inadequate. This is generally adequate for tagging purposes, though I know you're talking about the wiki.

The up front investment of work in creating this sort of association is prohibitive for the small gain. The wiki pages here for characters and series here are, really, just a bonus. They're not a critical part of the site and it's not a big deal if they don't exist.

After all, if you want to know what characters are in a show, there are plenty of sources outside of danbooru that will tell you that. Wikipedia, ANN, official websites, etc. When I'm researching something, I use a variety of sources.

I'm doing something like this on 3dbooru but it's not automated in any way. It's only really being done because it's the least convoluted way we could think of to get japanese names into the wiki so we can just search it when making an upload instead of running it through a romanizer and trying to figure out what the name is.

The amount of work to get it done automatically through a database isn't really worth it and jxh already mentioned why we don't do implications already.

This is a bit off topic, but is there a way to use the related tags feature without going into a post and editing the tags? Like suppose I am wondering which artists have the most images on here that are tagged with translation request. I'd have to go to a post, edit the tags, type translation request, click "related artists", then copy down the artist names that come up, then cancel the tag edit.

Not that I know of. It was intended as a tagging aid so I don't think it crossed anyone's mind to put it anywhere else. Hmmm, are you thinking of being able to, say, search "relatedcopy:translation_request" and get something? That could be interesting.
