It should be done for every artist unless the tag was recently created. If someone looks for the artist using the old name they should be able to find the new tag. Unused aliases are automatically retired so there's no concern of pollution, better have an unneeded alias that gets deleted after two years than someone failing to find an artist because the tag was renamed.
