I seriously dont understand why they havent just enabled some, if not all, of the gold features in the meantime. Its been over a year and there is no communication, no ETA, nothing. I'm on this site so I can find and look at pictures I might like, and there are 100k+ images I would like to add to that pool to search from. I wonder how they are expexting to retain any new people if such basic features available on other sites are locked behind an, admittedly cheap, paywall. One that isn't even functioning to let us get those features.

At this point I wish you'd just remove the Gold notifications for non-Gold users. It's so much more frustrating to see "Enable Gold to see these missing images!" and then not having the option to do that then it would be to just see nothing.
You could add this to your custom CSS:
#upgrade-account-notice, .hidden-posts-notice { display: none !important; }

See help:users for the rough guidelines, but like you said there's no specific criteria that can "guarantee" something.
To be honest, the information on that page feels too vague to me to even be considered a "rough guideline." Like, 600 tag edits seems like a pretty large number to me, but I'm very certain that that's nowhere close to what's required to even be considered for builder. And I don't really have any way of knowing whether that's halfway there, or more like a tenth or a thousandth of the way. I just think it kinda sucks trying to work towards something when you can't even have a general idea of how far away the goal is.

I don't know how helpful this will be since it's different for everyone and many things are taken into account, but these were my stats when I was promoted to Builder:
Keep in mind that most of the individual changes I made are very minor (mostly rerating posts or adding single tags). Also, don't focus too much on my promotion date; I was able to spend several hours a day on Danbooru during that time to reach that number of edits quickly.

Please know that i barely had like a 5th of blank user's tag edits when i got promoted, and forum activity helps.
Also 600 tag edits seems like a huge number, but just like i said to others before, when you get familiar with tags and shortcuts, it's a number one could easily reach in 2 weeks of sprinkling tag edits within an otherwise casual browsing depending on the daily time spent, and you don't need to rush it, let's say 1 month of casually tag editing 1 out of 10 posts you come across on average with site familiarity and you'd for sure be past a significant portion of the work. And last, it's better kept only in the hands of users who don't vandalize tags, but there are userscripts that make the ordeal more time efficient, mainly danbooru EX

Back in May I was spending enough of my free time editing tags that I eventually burned myself out, and I still only ended up with around 600 edits (and I already had a couple hundred before that). I feel like a lot of people in this thread are massively understating the amount of work it takes to get Builder, especially if you already have a full-time job and don't want to spend even more time working outside of work just for the sake of being able to use some of this site's basic features.
I think if they're not going to bring Gold back (which really seems like the case at this point), then they should at least replace it with something. Maybe have some sort of "mini-builder" status that has less privileges than Builder (i.e. the same privileges as Gold) but requires less work to earn. I realize the admins probably don't have much incentive to actually implement something like that, but I can at least dream.

Understandable, but key part of my point is getting familiar with whatever has to to with editing tags, i still remember when my first ~thousand tag edits felt like (and were) a huge time commitment overall, just like for you, but there's a critical point at which the same amount and quality of edits is done with much less time and effort, because of familiarity with some tags. Of course don't burn yourself out, if going out of your way searching for posts to edit does that to you, really, don't do it, and you don't need that to get builder anyway, it doesnt matter how much time passes from your time of registering to the day you get builder. You get it when admins/mods notice that the total contribution on your account deserves a promotion and there's no time limit that i'm aware of.
What i'm trying to say is: just remember the relevant keyboard shortcuts to edit tags, and sprinkle some edits here and there when you notice a need for it during casual browsing (instead of forcing yourself) "just in case" it helps you get builder sooner than gold purchases are back to available "just because you can", you can concentrate on a handful of tags that you care about, that'll become much less of a chore and more of a no-brainer.

That would be an easy mentality to have if earning builder weren't a requirement for full usage of the site, but it is. Even basic things like privated favorites or adding "order:score" to a two-tag search are locked behind it. At this point, it's clear that gold isn't coming back anytime soon (if ever), which makes it hard not to think of builder as something that needs to be earned as quickly as possible.
well, you can always just, not need builder. better features are locked behind builder to encourage contribution, and it’s really not hard to rack up a meaningful record by doing a small chunk each day. we have dozens of people with full-time jobs who do the same.
two tag search doesn’t stop the vast majority of blue users from getting what they want from the site (read: charname rating:e) so yeah, it sucks but you have to take that jump.

If you look at the listing and search by 'post' and 'member' some have two thousand and have not gotten even builder.

Half of the people on the first page of that list are users that have been permabanned/demoted. The rest consist of users with high deletion ratios, multiple negative records, or histories of causing problems.
I'll repeat what I've said before: It doesn't matter how many contributions you have, if they're shit contributions.

i'm rather intrigued by the order:score limitation because i have a vague memory of using it long before i got builder, but maybe i'm missing something again

+ what blindvigil said, and the fact that getting builder at 2k total edits is kind of an optimistic scenario, i've personally never seen a user get builder from 2k tag edits. Maybe if most of it is very high-tier tag gardening with next to no mistakes.
Rather aim for at least 5k for something more realistic

order:score counts towards the tag limit, so it can only be added to single-tag searches for members.

Forgive me if I don't think that "just stop wanting to be able to properly use the site" is particularly good advice.

Those features aren't supposed to be locked behind builder though, since gold is supposed to be an option.
