Walther PP pistol alias (PPK is too size specific)

Posted under Tags

BUR #16182 has been rejected.

create alias walther_ppk -> walther_pp

The PPK is basically the shorter variant of the Walther PP despite being well-known. While in context of depiction on illustrations, the handgun may be portrayed as its main full-length PP. Also, size difference of a weapon model remained visually insignificant. The K stands Kurz, meaning "Short(ened)".
This alias is done in the same manner, why are we having the tag M1911 instead of M1911A1. Because not all M1911's are not always depicted as the A1 variant. While all of them are the M1911.

As a rule of thumb, the Walther PPK is a variant of Walther PP, but not all Walther PP's are PPK's.

What is your new proposal for the wiki/Does the present wiki require changes if the alias goes through?

I've not yet gone through the whole thread on the H&K UMP change, so I'd also like to inquire the full necessity of an alias instead of an implication.

When it comes to drawing guns, unless they are traced from a photograph or a realistic 3D model down to the most minute detail, artistic license will be taken with their depiction. This is made worse with smaller guns like the Walther PPK, where only the most devoted gun enthusiast would accurately draw details such as the size of the barrel accurately in relation to the foregrip, considering the license taken with the proportions of the anime-style person holding that gun.

But the most important thing to note here is that the PPK is just more popular than the PP. When a regular person sees a PP, they will say "it's that James Bond gun", which another slightly more knowledgeable person would then incorrectly tell them that it's a PPK. Yes, the differences between the PP and PPK are greater than the differences between the M1911 and M1911A1, but the popularity of the PPK cannot be understated, especially on a website where people tag what they see.

For the same reason, viewers cannot tell apart each UMP variants because they're technically having same design in different calibres.
Alright, thank you for your feedback and I'd better keep the Wiki as relevant as possible.

The Walther PP (Polizeipistole) is a double-action semi-automatic handgun of German origin, designed in 1929 and manufactured by Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen. Its compact size and blowback operation influenced some pistol designs like the Makarov PM.

Available in different chamberings and variants, the most prominent one is the Walther PPK (Kurz), with shortened barrel and grip. It is associated with James Bond franchise.

Walther doesn't even sell the PP in the US market, just the PPK. Unless you're a collector or a historian, the PPK is the only exposure to the platform the layman or even gun enthusiasts will realistically have.

Thanks for a new knowledge. But there are even more variants than PPK alone. It does not matter if PPK is more well-known, I think using umbrella term for tags is still preferrable while maintaining accuracy. Size details are not prominent in illustrations.
