nuke wallpaper

This might be controversial, but right now the wallpaper tag is frankly useless. We have ratio tags to search for wallpaper ratios, and the wallpaper tag mentions the posts having to be worthy of being wallpapers, which is of course extremely subjective.

The ratio metatag, like ratio:16:9 or ratio:9:16 already does a much better job than this tag. I really doubt someone searching for phone wallpapers wants to see desktop wallpapers, for example. It's also a single tag search, which means there's really no upside to wallpaper.

The wiki can be preserved to guide users to the correct searches.

Maybe the tag should be hardcoded to redirect to a certain ratio? Same for phone wallpaper.

It's a futile effort at this point to clean the tag and thus does not serve really serve a purpose. It would have been ideal if the tag were applied only when the image was officially released as a wallpaper or the author designed it as one rather than being applied to any image fitting a certain aspect ratio since artists will also gravitate towards screen resolution to draw any landscape illustration.

In the past it was common for websites to have a download section for wallpapers and the like which was also lost to time. While I dislike nuking it I have to admit there's no tangible downside to doing so, and if I have to say the truth it wouldn't have conveyed that primordial of an information were its employment sensible.

Which ratio? 4:3? 5:4? 16:9? 16:10? 21:9?

if we were to go down that path i think we'd need to come up with a range of criteria
just throwing wallpaper on anything matching particular ratios wouldn't be very useful; e.g. a post could be only 320×180 pixels.
i don't think it's a feature we need to plan for immediately though

I've always understood that this tag applies to posts that can simply function as wallpaper. For example, if I were looking for a wallpaper for my desktop on danbooru, I could just use this tag. Let's say an user is looking for an Idolmaster wallpaper, he searches idolmaster wallpaper and the first post that appears could already make a fine wallpaper.

The reason I believe this tag is useful is that people looking for a wallpaper is pretty commom, and if someone want high quality art of their favorite anime as a wallpaper, I mean, what place would be better for that than danbooru? I think we shouldn't nuke it but garden it, and options like ratio:16:9 aren't intuitive for users as the wallpaper tag. The wiki for Wallpaper is very informative on the topic so at least that totally should be maintained.

Wallpaper is essentially just a pool tag with no use. If you want a wallpaper a ratio/height/width search is going to be better in most cases. Of the ~21k posts tagged wallpaper, 2200 are 16:9. There are 30k 16:9 images not tagged wallpaper, and that's just for one common desktop resolution. If you want to include more resolutions, for people who have different devices (ultra-wides, the plethora of differing mobile device resolutions, etc) the tag will just end up flooded by images that are unsuitable for any given person's use on their device meaning you'll want to use a ratio tag anyway.

FWIW, if a tag has no posts, when you search for it you are taken to the wiki page, so it getting nuked would probably make it easier to find wallpapers for the average user.

As for PSP and multi-monitor wallpapers, those collectively have 20 posts so they're clearly even less useful. They can also both be found with width/height/ratio easily.

This tag gets a decent amount of search traffic, but I think it doesn't do a good job of giving people looking for wallpapers what they want. It has too many different ratios, too many bad posts (are you really going to make post #4383607 your wallpaper?), and it's missing from too many good posts.

For some reason, the tag died off around 2012. Uploaders stopped using it. It went from getting 2000-4000 posts per year in the 2006-2010 era, to less than 500 per year after 2013, to 200-300 per year in the last couple of years.

Searching something like ratio:16:9 or width:1920 height:1080 will of course include lots of things that don't make good wallpapers, but given how subjective and underused wallpaper is, it's your only choice anyway.

I must have looked at "1920x1080", and added wallpaper tag without thinking too deeply about it, but I appreciate you bothering to make an example out of my upload.

Edit: Well, I removed all the offending tags now. ;)

Now the wallpaper tag is mostly useful to find terrible third-party edits that should be deleted. official art seems to be undertagged on old posts which would mean a small amount of official wallpapers would lose the tag, not that anyone cares or should engage in needle in haystack situations for an image nobody really cares about so changed my vote.
