Splatoon Tagging

Posted under Tags

I brought this up in topic #12251/p17, but perhaps that wasn't the right place for it.

I've noticed some have tagged posts that have just Aori and/or Hotaru from Splatoon with the inkling tag. I know that they are "inklings", but I had always thought that tag was reserved for all of the unnamed characters. For that matter, should Agent 3 not be tagged with inkling for the same reasons I outlined above?

I see at least a few solutions:

1. Keep the Aori, Hotaru, and Agent 3 tags separate from the inkling tag, unless there are other unnamed inklings in the picture.

2. Add the inkling tag to pictures with the Aori, Hotaru, and Agent 3 tags, but add the extra tag whenever an unnamed inkling appears in the picture.

Thoughts?

If the inkling have a specific name it would be useless to go by their species.
Because I can't really believy people want to search after Aori/Hotaru by typing inkling in the search box. They type in their official name. It's also the other way round: If someone wants to search after a normal inkling he/she doesn't want to see Hotaru/Aori.
At least that's how I'd search :P.
Therefore: Solution 1.

Solution #2 is probably the appropriate choice, as it would be treating inkling like any other race tag (elf, centaur, etc) and so wouldn't be making it a unique case, and as such would reduce effort of maintaining the tag.

The problem though will of course be encouraging the use of the extra tag.

The problem is: Inkling isn't really a race-tag like elf. It's a character tag that applies for every single citizen of Inkopolis. And Aori/Hotaru are special inklings.
It can also be seen this way: The inkling tag is for playable inklings (that'd also apply for Agent 3).

Solution 1 has been how the tags have been mostly used so far, and I don't see a reason to change it now. Trying to tag the Squid Kids with extra would feel awkward as hell, especially since they're the player character.

Regarding agent_3, it's more of an outfit than an actual character, just a regular inkling wearing agent clothes. So tagging inkling for agent_3 would be okay, but not for Aori or Hotaru.

It's extremely shortsighted to use their race as a specific character tag and restrict what can go under it. Can't we just rename it, add a qualifier, or something to it? At minimum there should be a tag for their entire race.

Nah, not really shortsighted but I don't think there are many poeople who think of inkling if they hear Aori/Hotaru. There are only 10 uploads that have done this. And on the Splatoon wikis they are treated more or less as seperate characters. They may be notable inklings but they are special in some way. So I don't think there is much need.

I was under the same impression that the Aori/Hotaru tags weren't being overly abused with the inkling tag as well, however, the point that inkling could probably be a race tag does bear some merit. The reason being is that I've seen characters from other series portrayed as inklings, such as post #2130259, post #2228003, etc. So far I've being using the "fusion + inkling + splatoon" tags, but is that the best tagging methodology?

However, I'm still more for Solution 1 myself, the reason being:

  • That it will be easier tag maintenance
    • I mean, how many Cirno and Remilia Scarlet posts are tagged with fairy and vampire respectively... hint hint, not a lot
    • Getting people to tag with the extra tag would probably prove difficult
  • There is a certain expectation of what people want to see when using the inkling tag
    • I.e. they want to see characters modeled off of the player character, even if they have altered hairstyles, clothing and whatnot
    • Having to use the inkling + extra tag to find these posts adds additional complexity

Finally, I'm still against using the inkling tag with the Agent 3 tag, since it seems redundant to tag a single character with 2 character tags. It has been mentioned that it is more like an outfit, so I'd like to make it a general tag like the different outfit styles used in the Idolmaster series. It should even be renamed to Squidbeak Splatoon, that way, when we see posts of Aori and Hotaru wearing the same outfit as Agents 1 and 2, without Agent 3 in the picture, it can be tagged with that as well.

Thoughts?

create alias agent_3 -> squidbeak_splatoon

If we're going to keep the inkling tag as a character tag, then it doesn't make sense to tag a single character with multiple character tags. The Squidbeak Splatoon tag can cover all instances of the prior Agent 3 tag, plus now people can search for posts of Aori or Hotaru in their single player mode outfits without Agent 3 in them. Outfit tags have been used before, such as the Idolmaster series.
