ToS Discussion Thread

I've got no blacklisted tags at all. It doesn't really make sense to hide stuff from yourself if you're an approver; I'm cool with members having it, but honestly, it seems absurd as a janitor to block content from yourself, especially if you have to police it.

I don't have a blacklist either, I was just mentioning it in case the new auto-blacklist stuff gets applied to all tiers, as a reminder that approvers would need to undo that change. If mod staff elected to have blacklists, we'd have to make sure we still had people covering everything.

Again, the idea is that the default blacklist will only be enforced on anonymous viewers and put on by default for all new users from the day the feature is implemented. No mods, approvers, or admins will have the feature enforced upon them. There's no need to worry about that.

It's never been discouraged, it's just not terribly popular around here.

It was discouraged to the point of being a hard ban for the first several years after Danbooru started enforcing rules. That's no longer the case. So long as there is an approver who wants to approve it, it is perfectly fine to go through the queue.

You know, if default blacklists for anonymous are implemented, they should have an option to turn them off without registering. It's as simple as setting a cookie via javascript, and having a toggle-link "disable all" or "enable all" under blacklisted tags. The same toggle will be useful for other users too, to temporarily see blacklisted images without clearing the blacklist, as it was discussed in neighbor topic.

Seems like it was only a soft restriction that was eased up on quickly. I don't know what happened on proto-Danbooru though, so there's that I guess. Either way it hasn't been a thing for at least 8 years. It is, again, just a matter of not being that popular around here.

A convenient way to temporarily disable my blacklist has been on my wishlist for quite a while.

What would also be nice is if, rather than all the blacklisted tags showing up in the sidebar, they initially showed as just "3 tag combinations blacklisted" or such, with a dropdown triangle to the left. And an "edit blacklist" link at the bottom of the list when you activate the dropdown.

Kounishin provided some custom CSS that does the dropdown thing (without the combination count or edit link). I've been using it for a long time now, and it works very well.

Only applying the default blacklist to anonymous and new users sounds good. It's easier to implement at least, and easier to modify later if we want to change the default blacklist since updating 500k users every time won't be necessary.

To make the default blacklist easier to understand, it would be helpful to add a link below the blacklist field in the settings page. Clicking that link would open a help page (in a new tab, if possible) that explained what the blacklist was about and how to edit it. The help page could also contain an auto-generated list of links to the wiki page for each tag on the default blacklist.

There's already a help link under the blacklist field, it points to help:blacklists.

Adding a list of what the default blacklist tags are to help:blacklists sounds useful, this would let already existing users know what the defaults are in case they want to manually add them to their blacklist.

Proposals are not finalized I guess. I want to make sure of this before we go with the final changes. Does everyone agree with the revised ToS?

Now, who has the ability to change the ToS page?

Dbx said:

Why'd the nude filters get nuked when this was still under discussion?

Well the ToS hasn't been officially changed yet, but even if it was it would still highly be likely this would have happened anyway. The user perhaps being ignorant of the changes or was knowledgable of the changes but still considers the material too low quality and still deletes it.

I do feel it was inappropriate of that user to outright delete the posts instead of flagging them for deletion though. We've had problems before of people ending up abusing their power with deletions, so it's not good to see another user so close to the line crossed by others that got in trouble.

One addition I might like to add to the prohibited section is Duplicates, but specifically worded as like "Altering an image to bypass duplicate detection and reuploading it after having failed to get the original image approved." It doesn't happen very often, but there are people who do it and it should be pointed out one will get banned over doing this.

Added. We're gonna need some elaboration on the Off-Topic stuff though.

Prohibited and Restricted Content

You may not upload any of the following:

  • Non-anime: Photographs of American porn actresses and Japanese AV idols, for example, are prohibited. Photographs of cosplayers, figures, or prominent figures in the industry are acceptable.
  • Manga: Uploading entire serialized manga chapters. Individual artistic pages can be uploaded if they meet the quality criterion.
  • Fake translations: Images that have false translations are not allowed in any case.
  • Bypass Duplicates: Images that have been altered to get around duplicate detection after the original image failed to get approved.

The following may be uploaded but will be put to a higher level of artistic and qualitative scrutiny than normal:

  • Furry: Any explicit image where a person's skin is made of fur or scales.
  • Grotesque: Any depiction of extreme mutilation, extreme bodily distension, feces, or bodies that are far outside the realm of normal human proportion (for example, breasts that are larger than three heads in size or penises that are larger than two heads in size).
  • Nude Filter: Images that have been edited by someone other than the original creator to remove clothing or censorship. These typically feature crude drawings of breasts or genitalia laid on top of the original image.

The following may be uploaded but are generally not recommended unless a better copy cannot be found:

  • Watermarked: Any image where a person who is not the original copyright owner has placed a watermark on the image.
  • Hard translations: Images that have been edited to replace the original language.
  • Poorly compressed: Any image where compression artifacts are very easily visible.

Updated

Could we have a thread on what is and isn't on topic? Or can we talk about it here? I'm still thinking of writing the wiki on that subject myself, but I'd like some input from everyone else first on that. Also, I agree with NWF Renim.

New users don't necessarily know about the tags they should blacklist to avoid retinal scarring. There's also the "WTH is this?! I'm outta here!" first impression factor that the user known only as "☆♪" mentioned.

I still think a concise blacklist is better than hiding a large fraction of the content. Additional suggestions what users might want to hide could be added to help:blacklists.

On that topic: The default blacklist as implemented in https://github.com/r888888888/danbooru/pull/2464 includes spoilers. At least for certain copyrights like kill_la_kill and mahou_shoujo_madoka_magica this will hide over 10% of the posts if my math doesn't fail me. I'm not sure if this is a good default.

That seems a bit harsh. Score is a popularity contest, of course it's going to be gamed.

I'm aware that score will always going to be gamed. And a ban is only a last resort if there is massive manipulation and e.g. talking to the user doesn't work.
Still I think it should be stated that manipulation is not OK especially so since score is going to be used to (already in use to ?) judge approvers performance.

(Since I have never used the blacklist before, I added an entry to my blacklist to try this out.)
Assuming the blacklist for anonymous users behaves like for registered users you can disable entries by clicking on them, but there is no enable all / disable all option and most importantly it doesn't persist this setting across site loads.

A cookie solution that makes this persist across loads would be very useful, for anonymous users and registered users alike.

I'm gonna have to agree with SD-DAken here on one thing, adding the word spoilers to the default blacklist may be too much. The original plan was to only blacklist tags associated with previously banned material and the spoilers tag covers a whole lot of posts that are not banned by any means.

But one thing I disagree with here is the option to turn off the default blacklist without an account. The incentive here is to have more people register to see such raunchy material. Besides, barring the spoilers tag, there's not a lot to lose if we blacklist guro, scat, and furry.

You can't be unspoilered for something once you've seen it so I feel it's better to hide them by default.

People that have seen certain series and are thus okay with spoilers for them can edit their blacklist from "spoilers" to "spoilers -kill_la_kill -mahou_shoujo_madoka_magica" for example to whitelist series they've seen. Also with issue #2474 anonymous users would be able to disable the spoilers blacklist.
