Because they're easier to pull out that way compared to placing them on the backpack or inside the legs. And don't get me started on the likes of the Hyaku Shiki where the beam sabers are impossible to draw because there's no room to wrap the fingers around them.

Oh hey! That's the Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary Art Book under Sinbad's foot. That's the most obscure reference I've seen in these artworks so far.

I'm assuming the book with the "S" on its cover and the book with the Green Hill design are either real life or in-universe books as well, but I can't identify them at first glance.

I'm tagging this with Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, given the Life Belt, Shovel Claws, and Air Necklace on the wall.
