I think his own baggage gets in the way, he is a widower very much in love with his deceased wife.

Based on the content of the nightmares, and the fact that he's nearly threatened her on the subject before, I think it's more than just a little bit of baggage. As nonchalant as he is, he is quite aware of her sins.

They both like to pretend that they are okay with it, but you see it pop out every so often. I don't think a proper romance is in the cards purely by virtue of the fact that:

A: He's old and actively looking to die, based on the way he acts towards medical
B: Neither of them forgive themselves for what happened to the kid
C: Kal might still harbor feelings of loyalty towards the one that drove the kid astray in the first place

I can see, at most, the possibility of casual sex by virtue of the fact that they get along as well as they do, but an actual relationship? I don't think either of them believe in that possibility. Even if they were willing to forgive each other, I don't think they *want* to be forgiven in the first place.
