type 56 assault rifle
Chinese: 56式突击步枪 ("Assault Rifle, Model of 1956")
Series of Chinese assault rifle, a variant of the AK-47 (specifically Type 3) and AKM. It started production in 1956 and continues to be used by various nations today. Easily distinguished from its original Soviet counterparts by its fully enclosed front sight, and all types are lacking side mount plates for attaching optics. Also often has a folding spike bayonet.
Major variants
- Type 56 – A copy of AK-47 with a fixed wooden stock and permanently attached spike bayonet. Since mid-1960s production switched from machined to stamped receivers, mimicking the AKM. Unable to attach underbarrel grenade launcher. See post #4647560.
- Type 56-1 - Like the AKM, it has a under-folding stock and lack of attached spike bayonet. See post #5400538.
- Type 56-2 - Introduced in 1980. Has a side-folding stock and dark orange bakelite furniture. Support standard AK-47 and AKM bayonets.
Not to be confused with the Type 56 carbine, a Chinese copy of the SKS.
