ryuuhou (azur lane)
Azur Lane's personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Ryuuhou. Character designed by Tony Taka.
First introduced in the Swirling Cherry Blossoms event in December 2019 (one of her skills lends its name to the event).
Appearance
See post #4601394 and post #3729037.
In her base form, she is shown wearing a black double-breasted military uniform with a long-sleeved orange print haori. She has long black hair tied in a ponytail and bangs swept to her right, large breasts, and pink horns.
She is also shown with a katana-wakizashi daishou pair attached to her belt. Her way to launch aircraft is via ofuda talismans, similar in principle to an onmyouji.
Skins

- Queen of Whales (unreleased)
History
She was originally built as the seaplane tender Taigei, part of a project by the IJN to build auxiliary support ships that can be converted to carriers quickly should the need arise. However, she suffered from improper hull welding (Japan did not develop welding expertise at the level of the US) and unreliable diesel engine propulsion that needed to be corrected after her ceremonial launch. Adding to her woes was her very questionable seakeeping (a flaw shared with other treaty-skirting warships of her time), graphically demonstrated in a typhoon in 1934 that forced her into another refit.
In late 1941, she finally received approval for carrier conversion.
Despite receiving destroyer-grade propulsion machinery that was more reliable than her original diesel engines, they were unable to offset the added weight of the carrier conversion. In addition, her short flight deck prevented her from embarking no more than 36 aircraft even with a mid-war lengthening refit.
Historically the only warship damaged by the Doolittle Raid launched from Hornet, she was commissioned late in 1942. Due to the aforementioned design flaws, she was primarily used as an aircraft transport and a training carrier, only seeing combat once in the battle of the Philippine Sea. Returning to Japan in early 1945, she suffered damage from Allied air raids but survived the war.
Trivia
- She, along with the Chitose-class CVLs, are classified as Zuihou-class CVLs in-game (technically Shouhou-class) despite all aforementioned CVLs not having anything in common apart from being conversions of seaplane tenders.
