Los Angeles (often appreviated "LA") is a major city located in Southern California, United States. It is the largest city in California and the second-largest city in the United States by population, after New York City. It is also large geographically: the greater Los Angeles area encompasses a vast metropolitan patchwork that stretches across approximately 503 square miles (1,302 square kilometers), including a number of outlying communities and suburbs. Los Angeles' Spanish translation, "The Angels", gives the city both its main nickname ("The City of Angels") as well as the name of one of its two Major League Baseball teams.
Los Angeles is renowned for its entertainment industry, particularly Hollywood, which is the center of the American film and television industry. Many major film studios, production companies, and entertainment-related businesses are based in Los Angeles.
