tankette

A type of tracked armoured fighting vehicle. Essentially a miniature tank, tankettes are small, lightly armed and armored vehicle typically armed with machine guns or a small-calibre cannon. Its primary function was to perform reconnaissance and anti-infantry roles.

Tankettes are prominently used during the interwar and World War II period before being replaced with infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).
