kiwi (bird)
Latin: Apteryx sp.
A small, flightless bird native to New Zealand. They have shaggy brown, hairlike feathers, long slim beaks with nostrils at the end for smelling prey, and are about the size of a chicken. There are five known species.
Kiwi are the smallest ratites (the group containing ostrich, emu & cassowary).
