dirigible
A type of aircraft, usually cigar-shaped, that floats by means of a large balloon, usually filled with hydrogen or helium.
There are three types of dirigibles:
- Blimps have a non-rigid airframe; its shape is maintained by the pressure of the gas within.
- Zeppelins have a rigid airframe which holds its shape even when uninflated. Zeppelins are named after their pioneer, Ferdinand von Zeppelin.
- Semi-rigid, a hybrid of the other two.
On Danbooru, dirigible refers to real life floating aircraft; for fantasy airships, see airship.
