callie (octo idol outfit) (splatoon)
Alternative outfit attributed to Callie from the Splatoon series. It was introduced in the sequel, Splatoon 2.
Synopsis
During the final battle of Splatoon 1, the main antagonist and leader of the Octarian army, DJ Octavio is defeated through the collective effort of Agent 3 (the Player) and the Squid Sisters, Callie and Marie. Who would offer their support by singing their biggest hit, the Calamari Inkantation, a J-pop rendition of ancient folk song that somehow has a profound, enchanting effect on many of the current living creatures of the world. Hyping up Agent 3 to new heights and making Octavio unable to resist the urge to dance uncontrollably to the tune, greatly disrupting his focus during the battle.
After the battle, the Squid Sisters would continue on with their usual state of affairs, announcing stage-rotations and hosting Splatfests every so often, culminating in what would be one of their largest events yet: the Callie Vs Marie Splatfest, where Inklings all over could vote and contribute to the cause of who is the better Squid Sister, a contest which would end in victory for Marie. Needless of the results, the popularity of both pop-stars would explode immediately afterwards, landing both of them high-profile gigs that would ultimately separate the two, simply due to the sheer overload to their new schedules. Marie would eventually become concerned if the Splatfest had damaged their relationship, and thus they both agreed to spend some time together and take a trip back to their home town of Calamari County the next time they'd share a day off, however Callie never arrived when the day came.
Bearing no resentment towards the Octarians and likely searching for a temporary escape from her life as a celebrity, Callie paid the Octarians a visit, where she would become more aware of their reduced state of living. Then whether through persuasion or coercion, Callie would fall under the influence of a recently escaped Octavio's Hypnoshades, and she began working as one of his subordinates. From this point and until her rescue, she would support the Octarians by maily trying to improve morale by decorating the domes they inhabit with stickers and glitter, as well as by lending her singing voice. Collaborating with Turquoise October, an Octarian band with Octavio as its producer, as well as with DJ Octavio himself. All while wearing this new outfit.
Visual description of the official design
This outfit is designed like a rebellious inversion of Callie's classic Squid Sisters outfit. Where her usual ika-somen hair ornament has been replaced by a cut, magenta-colored octopus tentacle and her earrings have been swapped out in favor of golden octopus sausages. Her eyes are now also usually covered by DJ Octavio's hypnoshades, a pair of animated sunglasses used to keep her under his influence.
She wears a black leather crop top with padded shoulders, a built-in spiked collar, a zipper on the back and three vertical pink cut-like stripes on the front. Her midriff is exposed and decorated with a pink octopus-shaped tattoo to the left of her navel, and she's also begun sporting black leather low-cut shorts with built-in spiked studs around the waistband, along with what appears to be pink underpants that can be seen peeking up above the shorts.
She also wears dark purple tights covered in magenta sequins across the rest of her legs, while on her feet are black stiletto-heeled boots with pink soles an pink buckles positioned on the outside of each ankle, the design of the buckles themselves appear to simultaneously resemble that of an octopus and an one-eyed skull.
Notes & trivia
- While wearing the hypnoshades, Callie's usual upbeat attitude is replaced by a stoic and stern demeanor. Many fan-artists also like to give her more mischievous or mean personality traits as well.
- In the Japanese version of Splatoon 2, Callie's speech while she is brainwashed is written entirely in katakana, similar to DJ Octavio. In Japanese media, katakana is frequently used to display a foreign language or accent. Implying that Callie is speaking Octarian. After she gets the hypnoshades knocked off her face by Marie, Callie begins to regain her ability to speak like normal.
- During the Inkopolis Live concert at Tokaigi 2018, Callie briefly speaks in katakana as a joke.
- While the stomach tattoo is officially described in The Art of Splatoon 2 artbook as being merely temporary and can be washed away with hot water (which is then demonstrated in Splatoon 3 with the Summer Nights outfit, showing that it isn't there anymore)
- Despite this, many fab-artists like to have her still keep it with her other outfits.
- Many artists also like to draw her pupils in the shape of spirals while wearing this outfit.
