A plant commonly cultivated for food. The tubers are edible, but some varieties must be prepared properly or the sap will cause poisoning. A common symptom of yam poisoning is itchiness when in contact with the skin and mouth, but certain varieties can cause paralysis or even death.
Not to be confused with sweet potatoes, which is called yam in certain places.
