Pronounced "voytek", Wojtek was an adopted bear cub that served the 22nd Artillery Company of Poland. To circumvent transportation rules prohibiting pets and mascot animals, Wojtek was officially drafted into the army- Complete with paycheck, dogtag ID, and personal record files. His work in carrying artillery crates during the Battle of Monte Casino earned him a promotion to Corporal, and a permanent presence in the 22nd Artillery Company's flag design.
