The Volkswagen Beetle, officially the "Volkswagen Type 1", is a two-door, four passenger, rear-engine economy car manufactured and marketed by German automaker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003.
Originated from an initiative of Nazi Germany to produce the "people's car", the Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made. Because of its very cheap price and reliability It was the best selling civilian four wheeled motor vehicle during the Cold War.
