Vegemite is a dark brown food paste originating from Australia that is made from the combination of Yeast extract from brewery yeast, vegetables, and spice additives.
Similar to Marmite for its distinctive, salty, and powerful savoury flavour, it was created in Australia after World War 1 as a result of a Marmite shortage during the War.
Like Marmite, it also has a reputation for being a "Love it or Hate it" food, since people either love or hate the taste depending on their homeland, be it Australia, other fellow Commonwealth nations, or elsewhere.
Considered a national dish to Australia where it is usually eaten on buttered toast with cheese, vegetables, or meats as an optional topping. In some cases, Vegemite can be used in savoury dishes like soup, stock, pizza, pasta, burgers, casserole, and even ice cream!
