Originally a Stephen King drama story in his 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption about Andy Dufresne and Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding (who is also the narrator), both inmates at Shawshank State Penitentiary in southern Maine for murder, though Andy is innocent. Shawshank is most well known for its 1994 film adaptation written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tim Robbins as Andy and Morgan Freeman as Red.
The movie received seven Academy Award nominations and has been the top-rated film on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) since 2008 when it passed The Godfather. In addition, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2015, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
