A United States Navy carrier-based torpedo bomber built by Grumman (and General Motors as the TBM), it replaced the Douglas TBD Devastator as the standard torpedo bomber of the US during World War II, especially after the Devastator's notoriously dismal performance in the Battle of Midway.
Gained fame as the torpedo bomber that sank the two largest battleships ever commissioned (Yamato and Musashi).
Post-war, some were transferred to foreign operators like the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
