The Empire of Corpses (屍者の帝国 Shisha no Teikoku, lit "The Empire of Corpses") is a Japanese novel written by Japanese authors Itou Keikaku and Enjou Tou. The novel was published by Kawade Shobo Shinsha on the August of 2012. It won the Special Award for the 33rd Japan SF Grand Prize (日本SF大賞 Nihon SF Taisho) and the Best Japanese Long Story Award for the 44th Seiun Award (星雲賞 Seiunshou).
Set in an alternate timeline, the world during the late nineteen hundreds is experiencing a rapid change due to the Corpse Revolution, a period of technological advancement where corpses are revived and used as replacement for the living for manual labor and war efforts. John H. Watson is studying as a medical student in the University of London when Professor Van Helsing chooses him to travel to Afghanistan as a spy to investigate the Corpse Empire created by Alexei Karamazov.
