Edit
A lever action centerfire rifle designed Arthur W. Savage and sold by his Savage Arms Company, beginning in 1899 (hence the name). It was a development of the earlier Model 1895, and was intended to compete with Winchester's ones, such as the Winchester Model 1894. Unlike its competitors, the Savage Model 99 used a rotary magazine instead of a tubular one, and had no external hammer. Although Savage's attempts to garner military contracts for the Model 99 were unsuccessful, it was a popular civilian sporting rifle and remained in production until 1998.
