A type of large umbrella, similar to a beach umbrella, primarily designed to provide shade but may also provide protection from the weather for outdoor deck and patio areas. They often lack decoration and commonly are in a neutral color. They feature a long shaft to tower above people and furniture, and are affixed either to a weighted stand or piece of furniture such as a patio table or lounge chair. Patio umbrellas may also feature a tilting mechanism to tilt the upper part of the umbrella to better block the sun.
Patio umbrellas are a common sight at pool sides and outdoor cafes.
